ANTHONY HILTON CITY COMMENT
A Wolf for your Christmas
list
This column does not normally
plug books, but today
there is a special reason
to make an exception.
A law has just come into
force that outlaws age
discrimination and, although
it affects all ages, it
is expected to have a
particular impact on the
over 50s. Under it, no
one can be forced against
their will to retire before
the age of 65, whatever
the previous rules of
the company or pension
scheme of which they might
be a member.
To coincide with this,
Peter Carvell - whom vintage
readers may remember as
the deputy editor of Michael
Heseltine's Town magazine
in the Swinging 1960s
- has turned his own back
on retirement to write
Silver Wolf, a handbook
for our times, published
by Delancey Press. The
message is that your 50s
are not the time to think
about retirement - it
is the time to create
a grand plan for the next
20 years of your life.
It is a time when
you dust down your old
dreams, and ambitions,
sort out your finances
and take charge of your
life, says Carvell.
And his book explains
how to do it. One hesitates
in October to recommend
Books for Christmas, but
for so many people this
one is spot on. |
